Rua do Infante of Macao hides an inconspicuous small shop. Even though the surrounding shops have already been refurbished, it still retains a nostalgic 1960s look.
The old-type signboard with marks of time all over it; the metal cart fully loaded with peanuts; and the wooden shelves.
Selling peanuts, melon seeds and other snacks on this street since 1962, it has never left the street to this day.
Si Heung offers a large variety of peanuts and melon seeds. Peanuts imported from Qingdao and Guangdong have to undergo processing such as deep-frying, stir-frying and baking before being coated in flavours such as red fermented tofu, liquorice, fish skin, shrimp roe, Sichuan spicy, wasabi and abalone, with no preservatives added. Mr. Sam, the owner, is the second-generation successor of the shop. Over the years, he has been taking on by himself all the tasks that he can manage, passing down this “old flavour" with actions.
