Focus of Development:

To establish itself into a manufacturing innovation centre and an aviation hub of the west of the Greater Bay Area (GBA); to develop itself into a high-quality forest city in the GBA; to deepen the integrated development of Guangzhou and Foshan and lead the coordinated regional development in the province.

Overview:

Foshan is located in central Guangdong, the hinterland of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), close to Hong Kong and Macao and borders Guangzhou in the east and Zhongshan in the south. It is an integral part to the Guangzhou-Foshan Metropolitan Circle, Guangzhou-Foshan-Zhaoqing Economic Belt and Pearl River-Xi River Economic Belt, China’s advanced manufacturing base, Guangdong’s major manufacturing centre and takes a leading position in Guangdong’s economic development.

The size of economy of Foshan is the third largest in Guangdong, only behind Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Industry clusters with unique characteristics are formed in many towns of Foshan, each of which has a distinctive specialization in a certain industry, such as Ronggui and Beijiao specializing in household appliances, Lecong and Longjiang in furniture, Shiwan and Nanzhuang in ceramics, Dali in aluminium products, Chencun in flowers, and Xiqiao in textiles.

While secondary industry is the biggest contributor to the economy, Foshan has been directing its development towards emerging industries such as high-end and new electronic information, semiconductor lighting, energy conservation and environmental protection, and new energy vehicles in recent years. In the future, Foshan will develop an internationally competitive modern industrial system, with a focus on developing industries such as automobile and new energy, robotics, intelligent equipment, new material, biomedicine and big health, among others.

Being in the core area of the PRD cities, Guangzhou and Foshan have high industrial complementarity, spatial proximity and similar cultures. The synergy between the two will be conducive to the further enhancement of efficiency and leverage the leading role of the strong combination of the two. With the pilot free trade zone being a demonstration, the infrastructural interconnectivity and industrial integration between Guangzhou and Foshan will be enhanced with a view to leading the integration of Guangzhou and Foshan to achieve a high-standard and more sustainable development.
