Focus of Development:

To establish itself as a centre of advanced manufacturing industries of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and to actively transform itself from a single-industry city to an integrated node city.

 

Overview:

Dongguan, also known as Guancheng, is a prefecture-level city in Guangdong Province and one of the five prefecture-level cities in China that do not have county-level divisions. Located in south-eastern Guangdong on the east bank of the Pearl River Estuary and bordered by Shenzhen to the south, it is Guangdong’s major transportation hub and foreign trade port.

The Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area supports the development of a globally influential and competitive cluster of world-class high-end manufacturing industries, such as electronic communications, on the east bank of the Pearl River with Shenzhen and Dongguan as its core; supports Dongguan in transforming and upgrading traditional industries; supports Dongguan in cooperating with Hong Kong in the development of the Dongguan Binhaiwan New District, form a cluster of headquarters of high-end manufacturing industries, develop modern service industries, and develop a R&D base for strategic emerging industries.

Dongguan is a manufacturing base for multinational corporations around the world, and an emerging industrial and commercial city in China. The industrial structure of Dongguan is primarily made up of the secondary and tertiary sector. The local economy is driven by the export-oriented manufacturing sector, which has a solid competence and well-built system. As regards the service sector, Dongguan is committed to forming a modern service sector compatible with the advanced manufacturing industries. This includes producer services such as finance and insurance, services outsourcing and exhibition and business management, and consumer services such as health and elderly care.

In recent years, Dongguan has been intensively advancing initiatives of replacing manpower with automation and of doubling the growths of enterprises, and fostering a faster transformation of the focus of the city’s secondary sector from traditional manufacturing to smart manufacturing. The Songshan Lake High-Tech Development Zone, which gathers well-known multinational corporations and innovation incubation platforms, is Dongguan’s dynamic innovation engine. Key emerging industries such as new-generation information technology, high-end equipment manufacturing, new material, new energy and biotechnology, among others will be the focus in the future.
